Preferences

My favorite language currently is Rust, despite issues I have with the foundation that steers it. I use Typescript for my $dayjob and enjoy using it. I believe most haters don't understand how to use its type system to its fullest. I prefer to allow my code to do the convincing. Somehow Typescript hasn't degraded despite Microsoft's patronage.

Whatever language or tool I am using, I prefer to understand it as fully as I can. I have worked with a few languages other than Rust and Typescript. I try to resist the trap of the generalist and embrace the joy of the polyglot. I feel each language has something different to teach, much that can deepen understanding when considering consistent aspects across different technologies.

"AI"

I do not use LLMs or generative AI. I object to their considerable ethical harms. I accept that others use this technology and I cannot avoid its output even as I disagree with its use. I don't really care if it is good or not, it is deeply antithetical to my relationship with technology and with those I collaborate with.

If I use the outputs of generative AI, knowingly or not, I have not found or created a viable alternative. I appreciate all help identifying projects that are free of both generative AI and of bigotry.

Values

I favor open technology and systems, my reasons for doing so are evolving. I am realizing openness is more of a means and that human ends, primarily respective everyone's human dignity, are the most important. How we create and use technology matters in its relationship to those human ends.

I have and recognize a lot of privilege. As science fiction author John Scalzi once quipped, I have lived life on the easiest difficulty setting.

I am a work in progress powered by feedback. I practive non-violent communications and appreciate all feedback offered compatible with that approach.

Hosting

I created this forge a few years ago when I decide to minimize my use of Github. That forge has degraded considerably since Microsoft acquired it. Membership on this forge is private even though many of the hosted projects are public. If we know each other and you'd like an account here, let me know.

I host many other services for my own use and that of my friends. I enjoy offering non-corporate, more ethical alternatives. Hosting allows me to practice skills valuable for my $dayjob and is something I happen to enjoy.

This forge runs on a droplet hosted at Digital Ocean that I pay for personally.
